Though yearbooks are not the best tools for finding old classmates, they can be useful in a few ways. If you are trying to find someone and all else has failed, there may be something you have missed, and that something might end up being rather simple. There are some yearbooks that you can find online, but most are not. You may have to go about getting the information the old fashioned way.

When searching for a classmate, you are probably searching for them by name. However, are you sure you have the name right? Though names like Smith or Jones are not easily messed up, less common names can have odd spellings. If you get your hands on your yearbook, or one from around the same time, you can verify that you are spelling the name the right way. That can make a huge difference in finding someone and going in the wrong direction.

An even bigger problem can be forgetting last names or even first names. If you are searching for someone you have not seen in a long time, you may jump into your search only to realize that you can’t quite remember what their last name was. If you can get your hands on a yearbook, you can find them by picture and the name will be right there for you.

You should also remember that each yearbook is different. Some schools do different things, and you don’t know what you may find. Once you have remembered a name or found a picture, you then have more to go on. Some books have graduating students list what they are planning to do in the future. If someone has listed a college, you can then locate that college and see if they are indeed past students. That might have been the link you needed to find your lost classmate.

Also remember that sometimes students are in clubs and special activities, and that might give you a clues as the what they are going to do in the future. If someone has not listed a college, but they are in the Business Club, you may be able to search larger business schools to see if they are alumni there. This might be hard information to get, but you may get some answers if you talk to the right person.

When you decide you would like to get a copy of your high school yearbook, you should call your school if you can’t find it anywhere else. They should be able to tell you if you can still order it somewhere, or if you are out of luck in that department. There may be times when they will go through the ones they have in stock, as they should have a few from each year on hand, and get you the information that you are seeking.
